The 336 Columns

The cistern is supported by 336 large columns. You can spot different styles, including Corinthian, Doric, and Ionic capitals. Walking here feels like being in an underground forest.

02 Ancient Roman Medusa head statue positioned upside down at the base of a column in the Basilica Cistern

The Medusa Heads

Located in the back corner, these two heads are the most famous part of the cistern. Their origin is still unknown, which makes them even more interesting. Many visitors combine the Basilica Cistern with Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace on the same day.

03 The Hen's Eye column in the Basilica Cistern features teardrop-shaped engravings on its marble surface.

The Hen's Eye (Crying) Column

This column has patterns that look like tears. It is linked to the memory of workers who died during construction.

Light & Art Installations

The Walking Platforms

Visitors walk on raised platforms above the water. These paths guide you through the cistern and help you explore safely. The low light, water sounds, and wide space create a unique underground experience — quiet and peaceful, far from the busy streets above.
