02
How to get there.
The Basilica Cistern is located in the Sultanahmet area, very close to Hagia Sophia. Topkapi Palace is also within walking distance.
By Tram (T1 Line)
This is the best way. Get off at Sultanahmet Station. It is only a 2-minute walk from the station.
By Marmaray
Get off at Sirkeci Station. From there, you can walk uphill for 10 minutes or take the T1 tram for two stops.
On foot
If you stay in Sultanahmet or Sirkeci, you can easily walk to the entrance. It is right next to Hagia Sophia in Sultanahmet.
By Taxi
Taxis can drop you near the square, but many streets are closed to cars. Walking or the tram is faster.

What to wear & important tips.

Temperature · 16°C
It is always cool and a bit cold inside (around 16°C). Even in summer, bring a light jacket or sweater.
Shoes · grip
The floor and walking paths are often wet and slippery. Wear comfortable shoes with a good grip. Avoid high heels.
Photography · no flash, no tripod
You can take photos with your phone. However, do not use flash and do not bring big tripods. Night mode on your phone works best.
Security · small bags only
There is a quick security check at the entrance. Do not bring large suitcases or big backpacks.

Baby strollers
Strollers are allowed, but a baby carrier is easier because of some narrow areas and the humidity.
Restrooms
There are no toilets inside the cistern. Please use the public restrooms in Sultanahmet Square before you enter. There are public seating and rest areas in Sultanahmet Square near the entrance.
